Which Island Is Right For You?

Gili Islands Travel Guide

The Gili Islands feel like a world of their own. Just off the coast of Lombok, these three tiny islands offer a completely different rhythm of life.

No cars, no motorbikes, no noise. Only turquoise water, white sand, and the slow, peaceful pace of island living. While they may look similar at first glance, each island has its own personality, atmosphere, and experience. Choosing the right one can shape your entire trip.

Beyond the well known trio, there are also lesser known islands scattered across the region, places I cannot wait to explore in the future. This Gili Islands Travel Guide will help you understand what makes each island unique.

Transportation

How to get to the Gili Islands

From Bali to the Gili Islands

Depart by fast boat from popular ports such as Padang Bai, Serangan or Sanur in Bali. Padang Bai is often the most convenient for travellers in central or east Bali.

Travel time is usually around 1.5–3.5 hours depending on departure port and sea conditions.

Arrive directly at the shores of Gili Trawangan or Gili Air (many boats also serve Gili Meno or require a short local connection).

Book your tickets at least a day in advance during peak season (July to August) as boats fill up fast. Public boats are cheaper but less predictable than private speedboats.

From Lombok to the Gili Islands

Reach a harbour on Lombok — the most common is Bangsal Harbour on the northwest coast. Other departure points can include Teluk Nare or Senggigi depending on your starting point.

Take a short boat ride from Lombok to the Gili Islands. A speedboat is the fastest option, typically taking around 10–15 minutes to reach Gili Air or Gili Meno, and slightly longer to Gili Trawangan. Alternatively, you can choose the public boat, which is more budget-friendly but slower and usually departs only once it is full.

You may be required to pay a small tourist or harbor fee upon arrival at the Gili Islands. The charge is typically around 10,000 to 20,000 IDR per person, depending on the island, and is usually collected in cash.

The island that never sleeps

Gili Trawangan

Why Visit Gili Trawangan?

Best Nightlife in the Gilis – Beach parties, sunset DJ sessions, and live music happen every night of the week, making it the social hub of the three islands.

Excellent Diving – Dive sites like Shark Point and Turtle Heaven are just minutes from shore, with regular sightings of reef sharks, sea turtles, and even manta rays.

International Food Scene – From Indonesian warungs to Italian restaurants, sushi bars, and vegan cafes, Gili T has the most diverse dining options of all three islands.

Best Things to Do and See on Gili Trawangan

Night Market – The Gili T night market sets up every evening near the main strip with local vendors serving fresh grilled seafood, nasi goreng, and satay at affordable prices.

Sunset Swing Photos – The iconic ocean swings on the west coast are the most photographed spots, particularly during golden hour and high tide. Be prepared for long queues.

Snorkelling – Head over to the north-eastern part of the island. Here is where you’ll find Turtle Point, which is known to attract many turtles close to the shoreline.

Cycle Around the Island – Renting a bicycle is the best way to explore the island. With no cars or motorbikes, you can comfortably ride the 7 km loop while enjoying constant beach views.

Underwater Vespa – You can find this underwater Vespa just a short swim from the shore in front of the Ombak Hotel, resting at a depth of around three meters.

Dive Shark Point – One of the Gilis' top dive sites where you can encounter white tip and black tip reef sharks, along with huge schools of fish and beautiful coral formations.

Freediving Course – I attended a two-day freediving course at Freedive Gili Trawangan and had such an amazing time. I paid 5,500,000 IDR (about €275 / USD 327).

If you want to experience the best of Gili T without the crowds, head to the north or east side of the island where quiet beaches and turquoise water await, far from the main party strip.

The perfect balance

Gili Air

Why Visit Gili Air?

Best of Both Worlds – Gili Air has enough restaurants, bars, and activities to keep you entertained, but retains a laid back island atmosphere without the party scene.

Yoga and Wellness – Over the years, the island has become a hub for yoga retreats and wellness studios, making it the ideal island for those looking to combine beach time with mindful relaxation.

Local Character – With a larger local Indonesian population than the other Gilis, Gili Air offers a more authentic experience with traditional warungs and a genuine community feel.

Best Things to Do and See on Gili Air

Snorkel the East Coast – The coral reef along the eastern shore is one of the healthiest in the Gilis. You can go in directly from the beach and may find yourself surrounded by sea turtles, clownfish, and colorful coral.

Take a Yoga Class – Join a drop in class at one of the many yoga studios on the island, or commit to a multi day retreat for deeper practice in a stunning tropical setting.

Local Cooking Class – Indonesian cuisine is rich in flavor and diversity. Joining a cooking class is a fun way to learn about local ingredients and traditional dishes. At Waroeng Alam Damai, you can prepare your own meal and sambal.

Chasing Sunsets – The very best sunsets are on the west side of Gili Air. During a cloudless day, you can even spot Mount Agung on Bali in the backdrop.

Cycle Around the Island – Rent a bicycle and ride along the beach or through the interior to discover beach clubs, local life, and great restaurants. Bikes can be rented near the harbor or at most hotels.

Beachside Live Music – As the day winds down, Gili Lumbung Beach Club becomes a perfect sunset spot. Relax into a beanbag, enjoy the live music, and watch the sunset.

The quiet one

Gili Meno

Why Visit Gili Meno?

Total Seclusion – Gili Meno has the fewest tourists, the least development, and the most unspoiled beaches of the three Gilis, making it a true escape from everything.

Best Snorkeling Among the Three – The reef around Gili Meno is the healthiest and most diverse of the three islands, with the Nest underwater statues and Turtle Paradise being standout spots.

Romantic Atmosphere – Known as the honeymoon island, Gili Meno's serene beaches, boutique eco resorts, and quiet evenings under the stars make it ideal for couples.

Best Things to Do and See on Gili Meno

Snorkel the Nest Statues – Swim out to this unique underwater art installation of life sized human figures arranged in a circle on the seabed. Resting at around four meters deep, the statues are covered in coral and surrounded by tropical fish.

Snorkel at Turtle Paradise – One of the best turtle spotting areas in all of the Gili Islands, located on the west side of Meno where green and hawksbill turtles are regular visitors.

Walk the Entire Island – Gili Meno can be circled on foot in about 90 minutes. The walk takes you past deserted beaches, a saltwater lake (it's not worth it to visit!), and some of the most peaceful stretches of sand in Indonesia.

Watch the Sunset – Pick one of the beachfront restaurants for dinner and enjoy the sunset from your table.

Pomona Restaurant

Gili Meno has fewer restaurants and shops than the other islands. Bring cash and stock up on essentials before arriving.

The Underwater Nest Statue

They are easy to visit and accessible for most swimmers. You can join a boat trip from Gili Air or Gili Trawangan, or, if you are staying on Gili Meno, simply swim out from the beach. The statues are only few minutes from shore.

You don’t need any diving experience to view the statues, as they are located just below the surface at a depth of around four meters. The site features 48 life size human statues arranged in a striking underwater circle.

We arrived with a private boat very early in the morning, around 5:30 AM, to avoid the massive crowds. We stayed for a while, but as the area quickly filled up, it became, trust me when I say, a human aquarium.
