Colombo
Colombo is a vibrant and dynamic destination that seamlessly blends a rich history with a modern urban landscape. Here are some key points:
It reflects the cultural diversity of Sri Lanka. With a mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher communities, the city showcases a rich fabric of traditions, languages, and cuisines. It offers diverse shopping experiences, from high-end malls like Colombo City Centre to traditional markets like Pettah. The Lotus Tower, also known as Nelum Kuluna, is a notable landmark in Colombo and the tallest structure in Sri Lanka.

We spent just 1 night in Colombo, but it was enough to get a taste of the city’s vibrant energy, from exploring the colorful streets of Pettah to enjoying a sunset stroll along Galle Face Green.
THE CHARMING BEACH TOWN
Unawatuna
Unawatuna is a real favorite among travelers in Sri Lanka – and I totally get why! This little town on the south coast has some of the most stunning beaches in the country and makes the perfect spot to relax for a few days. It's only about an hour from Colombo, yet it feels like a peaceful tropical escape. Even though Unawatuna is quite small, it has a lot to offer: cute boutiques, stylish restaurants, and plenty of great things to do in the area.

Sometimes, you might spot turtles swimming offshore around Wijaya Rock and near the swing area. Please treat these animals with respect and avoid touching them.
Have You Ever Heard of Stilt Fishing?
We have met really kind locals who let us experience the traditional fishing method Stilt fishing, which is commonly practised in Sri Lanka. It is a fishing technique where fishermen perch on wooden stilts in shallow waters to catch fish. I would recommend visiting during sunset. Also, they will probably request some money for showing you around.
THE TIMELESS CHARM
Galle Fort
Located on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast, Galle seamlessly weaves together history, culture, and coastal charm.
At the heart of Galle lies its iconic fort, a well-preserved 17th-century Dutch fortress. It is not filled with typical Sri Lankan architecture but has loads of influences from the Dutch, Portuguese, and British.
Built in 1939, the Galle Lighthouse is more than an oceanic symbol; it's a trusted guide for ships and a beloved landmark in Galle. Over the years, it has safely directed ships and captured the hearts of both locals and visitors.

The main gate is the only way into Galle Fort, and walking around the entire fort at a relaxed pace takes about two hours.
A PICTURESQUE PANORAMA
Mirissa
Mirissa is also one of the most popular beach destinations in southern Sri Lanka – named the sunny beach town. From soft golden sands to rolling surf and crystal-clear waters, Mirissa has everything you’d want in a beach getaway. The ocean here is full of life! With a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of sea turtles or even majestic blue whales gliding through the waves.
The Mirissa Coconut Tree Hill stands as an idyllic vantage point offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. Renowned for its Instagram-worthy scenery, The hill is covered with many coconut palms that gently move, creating a beautiful outline against the sky.

Mirissa is small and easy to explore on foot, so leave the tuk-tuk/car for longer trips and enjoy strolling around. Keep some cash on hand, as many small cafes and shops don’t accept cards.
Into the Wild
Udawalawe
Udawalawe is one of the most popular national parks in Sri Lanka, especially known for its elephant population. It’s located in the southern part of the island, near the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, and offers one of the best opportunities to observe wild elephants in their natural habitat.
Why Visit Udawalawe?
Udawalawe National Park, established in 1972, is a wildlife reserve that spans approximately 30,821 acres (12,500 hectares). The park is primarily known for its large population of Asian elephants, making it one of the best places in Sri Lanka to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Wildlife You Can See
In addition to its significant elephant population, Udawalawe National Park is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including sambar deer, wild boar, peacocks, water buffalo, mugger crocodiles, over 200 species of birds, and several species of primates such as toque macaques and gray langurs.

The best time to visit Udawalawe National Park is early morning or late afternoon, when animals are most active. Safaris last 3–4 hours, and you'll need to hire a 4x4 jeep with a guide, either at the entrance or through your hotel. For better chances of spotting leopards, consider Yala National Park instead.
Where to Stay in Udawalawe?
We stayed at River Bank Resort and loved the experience. The value for money was outstanding and unbeatable compared to other hotels in this area of Sri Lanka. We also booked our safari through the hotel, and they supported us every step of the way.

Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay, located on Sri Lanka’s east coast, is a laid-back beach town famous for its world-class surf breaks and bohemian vibe.
From May to September, it becomes a hotspot for surfers chasing the perfect wave. But even beyond the surf, Arugam Bay charms visitors with its relaxed atmosphere, cozy beach cafés, and vibrant sunsets. Nearby lagoons and national parks also offer chances to spot elephants, crocodiles, and a variety of birdlife, making it a perfect mix of adventure and chill.

Ella
If you're heading to Sri Lanka, don’t skip Ella! This little mountain town completely stole my heart. It's cooler up here, the air is fresh, the views are endless, and everywhere you look, it’s just green: tea plantations rolling over the hills, waterfalls tumbling down cliffs, and jungle-covered mountains stretching into the mist.

Historic Hill City
Kandy
Sri Lanka’s second-largest city lies among lush mountains and scenic tea plantations. Just a 3-hour drive from Colombo, it’s a popular getaway for travelers exploring colonial architecture, sacred temples, and beautiful nature. The city offers a perfect blend of culture and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination.

Iconic Rock Fortress
Sigiriya
Sigiriya is a destination that offers a blend of historical fascination, natural beauty, and peaceful vibes. It’s an ancient rock fortress with epic ruins, colorful wall paintings, and stunning views from the top. Located in the central part of the country, it feels totally different from places like Ella, which are cooler, greener. Sigiriya, on the other hand, is hot (like really hot!), especially during the day, so bring water and try to go early. The area is flat and calm, with palm trees and gardens all around. It’s the perfect mix of history, nature, and chill energy.
